CiR2P Option 27 | Apply economic incentives

DISCUSSION:

Promising (or delivering) economic incentives can help sway a target government towards adopting climate actions strategies for human protection purposes.

Incentives can be used during a crisis, for instance, to persuade a target government to allow the effective delivery of aid (or to get them to the negotiating table), or over a longer period of time, for instance, to help a country transition away from something counterproductive such as the use of coal-fired power electricity.

Western nations could consider offering

Economic incentives (and sanctions) should support the development of low pollution and climate-smart systems in the target country. For instance, agricultural products derived from highly unsustainable practices could be embargoed in combination with investment and trade access for products that use drought tolerant seed varieties, drip irrigation, and reduced fertiliser.
